Does this matter?

This week while I was taking a walk and trying to capture the crazy pink of the sun through the wildfire haze, I noticed two of the willow trees I planted back in 2020.

They are taller than me by now. I had to smile.

They were my COVID trees.

You see, in 2020, I would go online and get all upset. Eventually I realized there wasn’t much I could do about it all.

But I could plant trees.

So I’d take my worry and my shovel and some willow cuttings and God and I would go out and plant some trees. That way, even if bad things came of the things I worried about, something good also came of them.

A tree.

Do I think that me planting trees made a difference in the big picture?

Yes.

Because I am tired of pretending that little actions don’t matter.

They do.

Little actions matter.

One little action after another wears down stone. One little action starts a cascade of actions. Every big action is made of thousands of tiny actions and all we need to do is one little action at a time.

One little action is all that has ever mattered.

The Canadian wildfires are upsetting. We can’t control them. But we can do the little things that we know will make our world better.

We can love our family and neighbors.

We can grow and make and eat good food with them.

We can tend the land we have been given so it absorbs more rain, captures more carbon, grows more varieties of plants, supports more animals, and better nourishes people.

We can also plant more trees.
